Leongatha Primary School (LPS) is a large primary school that has serviced its community for 130 years. Leongatha is a service town for the rural industries of South Gippsland, especially the dairy industry.  LPS is a major stakeholder in the Leongatha Education Precinct that was established following the co-location of the Secondary College, Specialist School, TAFE and Primary School onto a single site in 2012.

Leongatha PS has a current enrolment of 650 students, (Feb 2020), with enrolments increasing by 50 students since 2016.  The staffing profile of Leongatha PS consists of equivalent full time staff, 3 Principal Class, Teachers and Education Support Staff.  While each partner school in the precinct maintains their individual identity, there is a strong cooperation that facilitates a smooth transition for students.  The LEP (Leongatha Education Precinct) meets twice a term to discuss ways that the schools can support each other and the students.

Leongatha Primary School has four Learning Specialists, two Literacy Leaders and two Maths Leaders who are released from their classroom one day a week to coach staff and support students who have not achieved their expected growth in each specific area of the curriculum.  Literacy intervention programs such as MacqLit and MiniLit operate throughout the school.  These programs are run by three staff members who withdraw students in groups from their classrooms for dedicated tutoring.  We have a highly effective reading program called Fountas and Pinnell operating throughout the school.  This program was implemented five years ago and is proving extremely successful.

Our two Maths coaches are specifically trained through the PMSS (Primary Maths and Science Specialist) program at supporting staff and students.  These coaches are released from their classrooms one day a week to promote and improve the numeracy across the school.  Leongatha PS is a PLC (Professional Learning Community) school with all teachers trained in the PLC model.  Our school has recently been included as a PLC Link school to support other schools in the district.  The school has improved student outcomes in Reading, Writing and Numeracy by embedding a highly effective PLC model which will focus on Number & Algebra and then transfer to Writing.

There are 31 grades in the school and four Specialist classes of Physical Education, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Chinese.  There are five classes in grades Prep, 1 and 2 keeping the student numbers in the junior classes below 20.   Teachers work closely together in their PLCs.
